Bonnie Doon, Alberta

Bonnie Doon is a residential neighborhood in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada’s south-central region. Its western boundary is formed by the well-known Mill Creek Ravine Park. The Bonnie Doon shopping center is located on the east side of the property.

From the 1870s onward, Bonnie Doon was progressively established as a community. In 1907, the western portion of the city was annexed by the City of Strathcona. It later became a part of Edmonton following the amalgamation of Strathcona and Edmonton in 1912. The rest of the neighborhood was annexed by Edmonton in 1913, making it part of the city.

Bonnie Doon is a phrase from a poem written by Robbie Burns.

The River Doon in Scotland is the subject of this phrase. A. Cameron Rutherford, born in Ontario and of Scottish origin, gave his land east of Mill Creek the name Rutherford in 1910. He was the first person to do so. In later years, the name Bonnie Doon was applied to the existing neighborhood of Bonnie Doon.

Bonnie Doon is the centre of Edmonton’s Franco-Albertan community, and it is home to many of its members. It also serves as the home of the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean, which is the sole francophone university west of the Manitoba border. Additionally, Ecole Maurice-Lavallee is the only francophone high school west of Winnipeg, making it a unique institution.

The Bonnie Doon neighborhood is also home to the Bonnie Doon Commercial Centre, which was one of Edmonton’s first shopping malls and is still in operation today. The Bonnie Doon Community League, which was founded in 1918, represents the interests of the residents of the neighborhood. They are in charge of the upkeep of a community center and an outdoor rink.

Strathearn is to the north, Idylwylde and Holyrood are to the east, and King Edward Park is to the south. Other nearby neighborhoods include King Edward Park. These neighborhoods are referred to as the Bonnie Doon neighborhood in some circles.

In 2009, the population density in Bonnie Doon was 4198 persons per square mile. Given that the land area is 1.5km2, the population density decreased to 3,150 people per square kilometer in 2012. Following the 2019 municipal census, the population of Edmonton increased to 4726 people who lived in 2431 residences, according to the city’s data.

Bonnie Doon is served by two schools: Rutherford Elementary School and Ecole Maurice-Lavallee, both of which are located in the surrounding area. In addition, the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean is located nearby. The La-Cite Francophone building serves as the home of the French-language public speaking board, which has its headquarters there.
