Ritchie, Alberta

Ritchie is a residential area of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, located in the southeast section of the city. This street is named after Robert Richie, the previous mayor of the City of Strathcona and proprietor of Richie Mill. The Ritchie Community League, which was founded in 1922 and operates a community center as well as an outdoor ice rink, represents the community.

The construction of a rail route through Richie began in 1891. It travelled along Mill Creek Ravine and over the Low Level Bridge, among other places. As reported by the United States Census Bureau in the year 2001, over 24.4 percent of the dwellings in Ritchie were constructed before to the end of World War II. Between the end of World War II and 1960, another 35.5 percent of the total was constructed. 9.5 percent of the buildings were constructed during the 1970s, and 13 percent were constructed after 1990.

According to the 2005 municipal census, the single-family dwelling is the most popular kind of residence in the area, followed by two- and three-bedroom apartments. These make up 60 percent of the total number of residences in the area. Apartment-style condominiums in low-rise structures with fewer than five stories account for 32% of all rental properties. The majority of the remaining residences are duplexes and row houses, with a few exceptions. Only 55 percent of the homes are occupied by their owners, with the remaining 45 percent being rented.

The population of Ritchie is quite mobile when compared to other communities. A total of 19.6 percent of the population had relocated within the previous twelve months, according to the 2005 municipal census. Another 24% had relocated in the previous one to three years. Only 42.4% of the population had resided at the same residence for at least five years at the time of the survey.

Ritchie is served by three different schools. The Escuela Mill Creek is the first of these. It is a primary International Spanish Academy run by the Edmonton Public School Board that serves students from across the world (EPSB). Construction on the building began in 1946, and it became a bilingual Spanish-only school in 2007.

Ecole Joseph-Moreau is the second institution. Located in Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No.2, it is a French Catholic junior high school operated by the school district. The school first opened its doors in 1913, with subsequent additions in 1954, 1956, and 1975. The original 1913 structure is now only used to house the boiler system for the entire complex.

The Learning Store on Whyte is the penultimate educational establishment. It is a small outreach program for high school students run by the Environmental Protection and Science Board.
