Westmount, Alberta
Westmount is a well-established residential neighborhood in Edmonton, Alberta, located in the city’s center west. The Westmount Community League, which was founded in 1951, is the organization that represents it. A community center and an outdoor ice rink are maintained by the community. According to the 2012 municipal census, there were 5900 people living in 3437 homes in the City of Edmonton.
The original development of Westmount took place in the 1910s. At its inception, it was intended to be a professional neighborhood that catered to young people. Prior to the end of World War II, 25.6 percent of the total number of houses had been built. Between the end of World War II and the beginning of the 1960s, another 23.6 were built. Between 1961 and 1980, 35.8 percent of the total number of buildings were completed. After 1980, only a tiny fraction of the building was constructed. The majority of the homes in the neighborhood have been refurbished, with some being demolished and replaced with newer, larger homes.
The majority of the Westmount neighborhood is made up of single-family detached homes. They feature a significant number of historic residences, many of which are in the Craftsman or Four Square styles. Both the Westmount Architectural Heritage Area and the Groat Estates are within walking distance of each other.
The area east of Westmount is a popular shopping destination. There are several mixed-use developments, condominiums, and apartment buildings in the area. A blend of rental apartments and apartment style condominiums is the most frequent kind of home, according to the 2005 municipal census, with rented apartments accounting for the majority of all dwellings. The single-family residences, which account for 42 percent of the total area, are the second most prevalent type of Duplex.
More than 60% of the adult residents of Westmount have completed their undergraduate or graduate studies. The majority of the people have completed their education at the highest degree. From 16.4 percent in 1986 to 26.5 percent in 2001, the trend has risen steadily.
A variety of pre-schools and elementary schools are located in the Westmount neighborhood. It’s Exploration Time! Preschool, which is operated as a parent cooperative, provides educational programs for children under the age of five. The Edmonton Public School system is responsible for the operation of Westglen Elementary School.
Besides Westmount Junior High School, there are several more schools in the neighboring area, such as the Westminster Junior High School and the Ross Sheppard High School. The University of Alberta is also located in the immediate vicinity.
